In the Cornish language, ‘Keltek’ means ‘Celtic’, the name ascribed to the inhabitants of Cornwall during the age of King Arthur. The twelfth century text, “History of the Kings of Britain”, tells of the birth of the legendary king at Tintagel Castle in Cornwall during the 5th or 6th century. Until recent times this was viewed by many as mere folklore, but an ancient stone recently discovered at the castle, which has been dated to the 6th century, bears the mysterious inscription, “Artognou”. Could this be an early form of Arthur’s name?
